Understanding ADHD Through Neuropsychological Assessment

Neuropsychological assessment is an important tool in evaluating Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and understanding its impact on an individual's cognitive functioning, behavior, and daily functioning. The assessment typically begins with a thorough clinical interview to gather information about the individual's developmental history, medical history, academic and occupational functioning, as well as current symptoms and challenges related to attention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity

Comprehensive ADHD Testing in Morris County

Neuropsychological evaluations assess various cognitive functions that may be affected by ADHD including different types of attention, executive functions (such as working memory, cognitive flexibility, organization, problem solving, inhibitory control, etc.), processing speed and learning and memory. These tests assist with identifying cognitive strengths and weaknesses as well differentiating ADHD from other conditions that may present with similar symptoms.

In addition to cognitive functioning, Dr. Hahn evaluates emotional and behavioral functioning such as mood, anxiety, and social skills, which can be impacted by ADHD. This comprehensive approach ensures that families in Morris County, Bergen County, and the surrounding tri-state area receive an accurate diagnosis and actionable recommendations specific to each individual's unique profile.

What to Expect During an ADHD Evaluation

The ADHD evaluation process is designed to provide a complete understanding of how attention, executive functioning, and behavior affect your daily life or your child's school performance. Testing is completed in one full day to provide a realistic assessment of sustained attention and cognitive functioning, mirroring the demands of a typical school or work day. The day is structured with individualized breaks, outdoor time in our courtyard, and access to lawn games to keep your child comfortable and engaged throughout testing.

ADHD Evaluations for Girls and Young Women

ADHD in females often looks different than the stereotypical presentation most people associate with the disorder. While boys with ADHD are more likely to display hyperactive or impulsive behaviors that get noticed quickly, girls and young women tend to present with inattentive symptoms that can be easily overlooked.

Girls with ADHD are often described as "daydreamers," "scattered," or "disorganized" rather than disruptive. They may struggle silently with focus, time management, and completing tasks; challenges that are frequently dismissed as laziness or lack of motivation. Many develop coping strategies or "masking" behaviors to hide their difficulties, which can delay diagnosis by an average of four years compared to males.

By the time parents seek an evaluation, their daughter may be experiencing significant academic struggles, anxiety, low self-esteem, or social difficulties. A comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation can identify ADHD in females even when symptoms don't fit the typical mold, providing the diagnosis and recommendations needed to support her success both in and outside the classroom.

Dr. Hahn has particular expertise in evaluating ADHD in girls, teens, and young women, recognizing the subtle presentations that are often missed in traditional school settings.

Frequently Asked Questions About ADHD Testing

How does ADHD testing work?

ADHD testing involves a comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation completed in one full day. This includes a clinical interview, standardized cognitive and attention testing, assessment of executive functions (working memory, organization, impulse control), and evaluation of emotional and behavioral functioning. Testing in a single day provides a more accurate assessment of sustained attention and executive functioning, mirroring the demands of a typical school or work day. We structure the day with individualized breaks, outdoor time in our courtyard, and access to lawn games (mini golf, cornhole) to keep your child comfortable. If fatigue becomes an issue, we schedule a second session. The complete process from intake to receiving your comprehensive report typically takes 4-6 weeks.

What areas do you serve?

Our office is located in Parsippany, NJ, and we serve families throughout Morris County, Bergen County, Essex County, Hunterdon County, Hudson County, Somerset County, and surrounding areas in New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania.

Do you accept insurance for ADHD testing?

Dr. Hahn is an out-of-network provider. She provides all necessary diagnostic and procedural codes so you can submit to your insurance company for possible reimbursement. Many families receive partial reimbursement for out-of-network neuropsychological services.

Can you diagnose ADHD in adults?

Yes, Dr. Hahn conducts ADHD evaluations for children, teens, and young adults (typically college-aged). Adults ages 25 and older are typically referred to trusted colleagues who specialize in adult neuropsychological assessment.

What's the difference between an ADHD evaluation and a school evaluation?

A neuropsychological evaluation provides formal diagnoses when clinically appropriate and offers a comprehensive understanding of your child's cognitive strengths, learning challenges, attention, executive functioning, and emotional wellbeing. This complete picture helps your child succeed both inside and outside the classroom.

In contrast, school evaluations in New Jersey cannot provide medical or psychological diagnoses. Their sole purpose is to determine whether a student meets the legal criteria for special education services under IDEA. School evaluations focus narrowly on educational impact within the school setting and are not designed to provide a full understanding of your child's strengths and challenges or to support their development in other areas of life.

A neuropsychological evaluation gives you diagnostic clarity, a deeper understanding of how your child learns and thinks, and concrete recommendations that apply across all environments—home, school, social settings, and beyond.
